Should I Eliminate Carbs Completely?
You should not get rid off all of the carbohydrates because your brain and body must have some carbohydrates every day in order to function optimally. Lions should consume complex carbohydrates only. Include foods such as whole grain rice and legumes, but in small amounts. Also eat your vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and collard greens in a regular basis (it will help with constipation as well).

What About Low Carb Ice Creams, Breads, and Frozen Dinners?
There are many Lions who initially thought that running to the freezer section and loading up on seemingly Lion friendly food was a good thing. Unfortunately no.

Low carb meals, low carb bagels, low carb ice cream you thought would help you on your lion diet actually made you feel worse and you gained weight. Why?

These foods do not satisfy us the same way that real food does. Our bodies need real food. Diet foods leave the body feeling deprived and make us feel like outsiders who can’t enjoy normal food. When fighting weight gain, diabetes, and other weight-related disorders, it is important that you are using whole foods to help you regain health and stay at a good weight. Read our recent article about which foods lion should eat can help you with your real food selection.

Is Diet Soda A Lion Snack?
NO! If you read some of the supermarket tabloids about Hollywood starlets and their weight loss programs you may see Diet Soda listed as a "snack."

A main focus of the Hauser Diet is eating natural foods and products. This means staying away from food chemicals and artificial foods. Artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame and sucralose, are things we consider fake and artifical sugar. (No mater how much they claim that they are “like” sugar). Read related articles Diet soda and watch our video on fake foods.

Foods to Boost a  Lion’s Immune System
Broccoli: It is the powerhouse of cruciferous vegetables. With all of its Vitamin A and C it’s one of the most antioxidant rich foods there are! And did you know that 1 cup of cooked broccoli has more Vitamin C than an orange? So don’t think you’re missing out because you can’t have fruit.

Fish Oils: Packed with Omega 3 fatty acids, fish oils provide so many health benefits. Research is exploring all of the possibilities of this nutrient to fight off/ward off different diseases. The fatty acids can help boost immune function by increasing survival and reducing illness severity.

Garlic: The allyl sulfur compounds in garlic may help ward off illness and aid in overall health.

Organic Eggs: Eggs provide excellent protein for a Lion. When you buy organic eggs, you are ensuring that you are getting a protein higher in vitamins and minerals than its conventional counterpart and that the animal was not treated with hormones, fed diet additives, and the like.

Lions B-Happy!
B-complex vitamins are important for our mental and emotional health. Our bodies cannot store these vitamins, which means we must depend on our diet and supplements to provide these daily. Vitamin B-3, B-6, B-12, and folic acid deficiencies have been found to have a direct relationship to depression. What is the best way to get them? Eat your vegetables, especially the green, leafy ones! Vitamin B12 is unique in that it is primarily found in animal foods including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.

Can Lions Eat Dessert?
Lions need to eliminate sweets from their diet. As a Lion you are  not able to metabolize carbs properly and eating them will make a Lion feel terrible. This means fruits too. Some suggestions would be a peanut butter and soy milk smoothie or a cup of cottage cheese with some cinnamon sprinkled on top. It might take some conditioning to be in the mood for these alternative desserts when you have a sweet tooth, but after a while, you’ll begin to enjoy the different tastes and the way being on the Hauser Diet makes you feel.

After Dinner Snacking
Hauser Lions are fast oxidizers of food, and typically have low fasting blood sugar levels. This means when you do not eat for a few hours, your blood sugar can get too low. The longer your blood sugar remains low, the lower your energy, which may result in a difficult time functioning. You wake up in the morning with low blood sugar after you have been fasting since your last meal while you were asleep.

For your best energy, Lions need a little snack after dinner that is low in carbohydrates and higher in protein, such as a piece of lunchmeat.

Low Fat, Fat Free, Reduced Fat, Low Sodium, Low Sugar, Sugar Free
Of course as Lions you need to be buying foods that don’t have a lot of sugar anyways, but that means naturally low in sugar, not a modified product. As for the fat there are there a couple of reasons why you should avoid those products. First, as a Lion you can have the fat. A large portion of your daily calories are suppose to come from fat.

The second reason to avoid any foods with these labels is that they are most likely highly processed.

A Common complaints that people have with artificial sweeteners include GI upset, rapid heart beat, fatigue, or brain fog, to name a few.

A particular "Sugar Free" chocolate that we found has a printed warning right on the bag reading "Excess consumption may have a laxative effect." In other words, 'Your body may see this food as a toxin and need to get rid of it fast.'

Buying organic, natural foods would be preferred do to the chemical processing that is involved in non-organic foods. However, if you are not eating organic for one reason or another then try to stay with foods that are in their most natural state. When foods have a “low fat” or “sugar free” version, they have been even further processed. The producers of the food have taken something out, which also means that they have put something in. The added components of these foods tend to be artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners, or even modified fats. In short they are adding food chemicals. When you’re trying to be healthy, chemicals are not what you should be putting in your body!

Lion Snacks
There are many protein/fat based foods that you can snack on; you just need to think outside of the snack box! Here is a list of snacks to keep in mind for those in between meal cravings:

- Nuts - Just be careful of the amount
- Beef Jerky
- Turkey Sticks
- Cottage Cheese or String Cheese
- Protein Bars or
shakes - with low sugar content
- Hard Boiled Eggs

Constipation
Your diet does not allow for many fruits or grains, and allows for some vegetables. Lions need to make their carbs count! Make them the highest fiber containing, most nutrient dense carbs you can. The foods that are highest in fiber are usually plant based foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains-all of which are limited on the Lion Diet. Try to include spinach, broccoli, and collard greens on a regular basis. One food that is not limited on your diet but high in fiber is nuts, especially almonds. So use that as one of your snacks during the day to add a few grams! If you can not get adequate fiber in your diet, you may need to add a fiber supplement.

Foods that will make you tired
PASTAS, BREADS, SUGARY FOODS, FRUITS, GRAINS, BEER and ALCOHOL

Nuts On The Lion Diet
A big part of a Lion’s Diet involves including plenty of healthy fats into the diet. Fats will help increase blood pH and stabilize blood sugars.

Nuts happen to be one of the foods that fall into this category.  Nuts are easily incorporated into the Lion Diet and can add a lot of variety to your meals. Don’t think that nuts are only for nibbling on out of the jar!

What’s in Your Chicken?
All chicken is not created equal! In fact, most commercially available chicken is not fit for human consumption! I know that is a bold statement, but when you research this topic, you’ll be shocked what you will find! We recommend you buy organic chicken! Why?

Why is Bacon on the Hauser Diet?
Bacon is an animal fat, and if you purchase organic, nitrate free bacon, it’s a natural food. It’s no different than eating any other meat; we just consider it a fat instead of protein because a greater percentage of the calories come from fat as compared to protein.

As long as you stay within your limit of fat intake you should not get visions of clogged arteries every time you put some bacon on your spinach salad, or have a hearty egg and bacon breakfast.

So, "do I have to eat bacon as a Lion?" We give people a list of sample foods for each food category. The key word here is "sample" list. It does not mean that the foods on the list are the only foods included.  If you prefer, don't eat bacon, to get your fat from other sources, such as avocado or olive oil, that is just fine!

Mayonnaise
For Lions, mayonnaise is a good choice for a fat source. It is basically emulsion of oil and vinegar or lemon juice with egg yolks. It is high in fat, about 10-12 grams for tablespoon so Lions are able to handle mayonnaise better than the other
Hauser Diet Types, but portion control is still an important factor when using this condiment. Watch out for food allergies – eggs are among the most common food allergy we see and many people don't realize that a prime ingredient in mayonnaise is eggs.

Sauces and Condiments To Avoid
Barbeque Sauce

So many different flavors to choose from! Barbeque sauce can be a favorite for a lot of us. But what you may not know is that just one tablespoon of barbeque sauce can have up to 8 grams of sugar! Now we know that a barbeque sandwich or a slab of ribs has multiple tablespoons of sauce – so you do the math. Lions, beware, this condiment can send your diet in the wrong direction!

Teriyaki Sauce
The most obvious ingredients in teriyaki sauce are soy sauce and Asian spices. What you may not realize is that there is also pineapple juice concentrate and brown sugar (an of course, in non-organic brands loads of preservatives). Can you guess how much sugar that adds to one tablespoon? Close to 10 grams! So for Asian stir fries, teriyaki sauce is not the best for Lions. Either stick to small portions, or substitute with sesame oil, soy sauce, and rice vinegar.
Ketchup
What some people may not realize is that most non-organic brands of ketchup add high fructose corn syrup and/or corn syrup – leaving you with close to 4g of sugar for tablespoon.

RED WINE and BEER? NO!
Wine/beer affects people differently. Someone who suffers from hypoglycemia and who does not do well with carbs is not going to do well with wine/beer – red or white or brown! In other words, Lions are not going to feel optimal with added carbohydrates such as wine/beer in their diets. This will only provide them with additional calories, reduce their energy, and most likely contribute to a hypoglycemic episode.

Lions need Protein,
NOT Caffeine for an energy boost

Looking at Greg you would think he was the epitome of health. At 30 years of age he was athletic and at a seemingly healthy weight with good energy. However what you would not know by just looking at him was that he was having knee pain, poor digestion, was losing muscle mass, and needed caffeine to keep his energy levels up.

Like many Americans, Greg couldn’t function without two or more cups of coffee each morning. Similar to many of our
Diet Typing patients, Greg originally came to see us to heal his knee pain through Prolotherapy. Throughout the course of his Prolotherapy treatments, he kept hearing about and reading about Hauser Diet Typing. He decided to give it a go. His main goal was to figure out exactly what he should be eating to increase his energy naturally, without the aid of caffeine. He also wanted to improve his digestion and lose his gut that seemed to be forming as he was getting older. Read the post

Warmer Weather May Require Some Diet Changes
One of our Hauser Lions, Ron, a triathlete, emailed us saying, “I have been strictly following the Lion Diet. I eat primarily protein and fat – like eggs, bacon, chicken, fish, pork chops, along with some salad and vegetables. I have been feeling great on this diet since I started it last fall. In March I started training more and am doing a lot of running and cycling, but recently I found myself feeling sluggish with low energy, especially for my workouts. What am I doing wrong?” Ron lives here in the Midwest and at the time of the email, the temperatures were rising.. He came in to have his blood pH checked and it was alkaline! When he did his initial Hauser Diet Typing, his blood pH was acidic (low).

Following the Hauser Lion Diet had normalized his blood pH. With the rise in outside temperature and the increase in physical activity (which also heats up the body) Ron became alkaline. So we recommended that he add a few more complex carbs to his diet, such as whole grain rice, oatmeal, and one serving of fruit per day – in other words, follow the Otter Diet. It has been a few weeks now, and Ron reports that he feels more like himself, has good energy, and is not feeling “hot.”

When the weather changes, so does your blood pH. As the weather gets warmer, the blood pH rises (alkalinizes), conversely, as the weather gets cooler, the blood pH falls (acidifies).

Butter vs Margarine: Definitely butter!! Margarine should be avoided because it is just one molecule away from plastic!

Beating Your Sweet Tooth
Lions need to eliminate sweets from their diet because as a Lion you are  not able to metabolize carbs properly and eating them will make a Lion feel terrible. This means fruits too.

Some suggestions to soothe that sweet tooth would be a peanut butter and soy milk smoothie or a cup of cottage cheese with some cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Why Not Sugar Free Snacks?
One particular "Sugar Free" chocolate that we found has a printed warning right on the bag reading "Excess consumption may have a laxative effect." In other words, Your body may see this food as a toxin and need to get rid of it fast.

Common complaints people have with artificial sweeteners include GI upset, rapid heart beat, fatigue, or brain fog, to name a few.

Again, your health will benefit greatly by eliminating processed foods that are full of food chemicals and things that are toxic to the body.

How About Sugar Alcohols?
Typically Lions go for the Lo Carb Protein Bars because many list 0 sugars - carbohydrates! But guess what, they have sugar alcohols added to them to make them sweet. Technically, sugar alcohols are not sugar, but their molecular structure is almost identical. Sugar alcohols do the same thing as regular sugar-they increase your glucose levels, can cause heart disease, and turn into FAT once digested by your body.

People who need to watch their carbohydrates, lose weight, diabetics, people who have high cholesterol, and high insulin and blood sugar levels should not have sugar alcohols (mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, lactitol, isomalt, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates) because they still increase your blood sugar and insulin levels.

Eliminate them from your diet completely!

No Fruit At All?
Sorry, this is the wrong fuel for your engine! Always opt for vegetables instead of fruit. They are not the same, and we do not put them in the same category. Fruit has too much sugar for you Lions.

Lions and Allergies
Hauser Lion Diet Types like you require diets that are protein and fat based, with minimal carbohydrates. So Hauser Lions fill their plates primarily with animal-based products such as beef, chicken, pork, eggs, lamb, turkey, and the like, the smaller part of their diets being vegetables.

However, you may be missing another important piece to your overall health puzzle - food allergies.

Take the case of Ken, a Hauser Lion who had no clue what his allergy results were going to reveal because he didn’t really think he had any. But Dr. Hauser felt that something else was causing his symptoms of body pain, so he ordered the testing. When the results were in, Ken had a number of common allergies: dairy, eggs, gluten (wheat), kidney beans, and navy beans; and also some more uncommon allergies: ginger and psyllium seed.

Being a Hauser Lion, there were some changes Ken had to make and he was a little concerned. After learning about the numerous alternatives to some of these foods, Ken began to feel a little better. He learned that he could try other beverages such as soy milk, almond milk or hemp milk on the Hauser Lion Diet.

He also learned that eggs are not the only breakfast item a Lion can eat – he tried chicken sausage, organic bacon, and a delicious protein shake in the morning. The gluten free items on the market today are numerous, and thankfully on the Lion Diet, he could focus more on the meat and vegetables in his diet. One minor change – he had to stop taking his fiber supplement that contained psyllium and switch to a flaxseed supplements. It was a good thing for Ken that the allergy tests included so many foods, big and small!

There are many people that have food allergies that don’t even know it. If someone has a sensitivity or allergy to a particular food it could be causing symptoms like low energy, headaches, inability to heal properly, mental fog, weight gain, and many other symptoms. These symptoms can be relieved by avoiding any foods you are allergic too! If you haven’t had your food allergies tested, it may be a good time to consider having that test done; your health will never be the same!
